Bruce Carney

Dr. Bruce Carney is the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its Samuel Baron distinguished professor of physics and astronomy. A UNC faculty member since 1980, Carney previously served as the interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Senior Associate Dean for the Natural Sciences, and chair of the department of physics and astronomy. He provided crucial leadership in establishing the SOAR telescope in Chile, which UNC astronomers use both on-site and remotely. In addition to several other leadership positions, he has been the chair or president of the board of directors of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and the board of directors for the International Gemini Observatory. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees at Harvard, and his undergraduate degree at the University of California – Berkeley.
