Inspired by one of her first college classes — Sociology of Education — Loney believes her life will always be centered around education. At the University of Michigan, she researched the effect of charter schools on diversity in the Detroit Public Schools. While pursuing a double major in French and sociology, she spent the fall of 2001 in Avignon, France at the Institute for American Universities. But her desire to learn more about policy led her to earn a master’s degree at Duke University. While there, Loney gained insight on math and science teacher retention in North Carolina through a best practices analysis for the Hunt Institute. She also served as an ex-officio member of the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy Board of Visitors.
