Improving Science Education

Job growth trends reveal that the skills required of the future workforce are changing. Analytical and problem-solving skills are necessary for success. Despite the need for greater knowledge in and understanding of science and scientific processes, students are not getting a solid science education. Another disturbing trend is the impending shortage of U.S. science professionals.

The Hunt Institute sponsored the first North Carolina Science Summit in collaboration with the NC Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center and the Public School Forum of North Carolina. The Summit was designed to promote national and state initiatives that enhance education for all students in North Carolina as they prepare for competitive roles in the global workforce.

The Institute will continue the conversation begun at the North Carolina Science Summit, and support state leaders as they develop and implement solutions to this critical issue. A follow-up Summit, co-sponsored with the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center, took place April 2009.
