2009 Governors Education Symposium
June 14-15, 2009
The Umstead | Cary, NC
The 2009 Governors Education Symposium provided governors with
ideas and strategies to promote academic achievement and prepare states
to meet the assurances in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act
(ARRA). In attendance was U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
who opened the event with a keynote address and then remained through
the working sessions as we examined how best to maximize the federal
education stimulus funding to drive education improvement. Throughout
the sessions, governors focused on the education priorities outlined
in the ARRA: standards and assessments, teacher effectiveness,
longitudinal data systems, and help forlow-performing schools. The
Symposium offered governors a unique opportunity to engage and reflect
with Secretary Duncan and their fellow governors about how to best make
every dollar count in difficult economic times.
About the Governors Education Symposium
The Governors Education Symposium, conceived by the James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy, is designed to bring the nation’s governors together to engage in candid dialogue about critical challenges facing education. Each session examines a variety of core education issues, incorporating information from nationally recognized experts. Governors have extensive opportunities to interact with these experts and share practices in their states. The Hunt Institute has joined forces with the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices to co-host the 2009 Symposium and is pleased to have the generous financial support of The Atlantic Philanthropies, The Broad Foundation, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the State Farm Companies Foundation.
