Defining Alignment and Achieving College Readiness: The Roles of Higher Education Organizations and Leaders in the Implementation of the Common Core State Standards
By 2018, close to two-thirds of all jobs will require a degree or credential beyond high school. In order to reach that goal, all students must graduate high school ready to tackle college-level work. There is an increasing number of young people that enter our colleges and universities that are not academically prepared. The Common Core State Standards define the skills and knowledge students need to be successful in college and in their careers. The key to ensuring the success of the Standards lies in their implementation, and for implementation to be successful, higher education must be involved. From defining and measuring college and career readiness to transforming teacher preparation and professional development, higher education must help guide the way we prepare students to be career- and college-ready and train our teaching force. Participants discussed the Standards and the work underway to develop assessments and implementation. Higher education leaders engaged with colleagues and experts about what it takes to enlist the members of their associations to become actively involved in implementation and utilization of standards and assessments in our colleges and universities. The Hunt Institute was pleased to co-host the event with the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO).
