Holshouser Legislators Retreat

HLR logo faceThe Holshouser Legislators Retreat brings together North Carolina policymakers, state and national research experts, and education practitioners to have a candid dialogue about critical issues in public education. Initially convened in 2003 as the North Carolina Legislators Retreat, this “meeting of the minds” was co-chaired by former republican and democratic governors of North Carolina – Jim Holshouser and Jim Hunt. In 2013, the Retreat was renamed in honor of the late Governor Holshouser for his overall commitment to education. The event’s purpose is to ensure bipartisan collaboration in the name of quality education for all students in North Carolina. Policymakers from both sides of the aisle are provided with carefully researched information in a space where they can delve into the specifics of education policy – outside of the walls of the legislature away from the daily pressures of their positions, lobbyists, and media.

Born from the idea that effective education reform must be understood––if not driven––by those making fiscal decisions on the legislative floor, The Institute convened the first North Carolina Legislators Retreat on November 19-20, 2003. For 10 years, former republican and democratic governors of North Carolina – Jim Holshouser and Jim Hunt – co-chaired this “meeting of the minds” with The Hunt Institute team providing the extensive research that helps determine current issues and anticipate new challenges, and identifying the state and national resource experts most qualified to examine effective strategies. In 2013, the Retreat was renamed in honor of the role Governor Holshouser has played throughout the years. The Hunt Institute will continue to honor the legacy of both governors through its continued service to North Carolina Legislators as an honest broker of sound information.

Unlike any other convening in the nation, the Retreat has become a model for other states interested in the complexities of education policy. The Hunt Institute will continue to honor the legacy of both governors through its continued service to North Carolina Legislators as an honest broker of sound information.
