Focus on North Carolina

Improving education at the state level is the cornerstone of The Hunt Institute’s efforts. Our work focuses on creating the will, knowledge, and capacity to implement policies and practices that lead to better outcomes for all students. Improving student outcomes in North Carolina are imperative if we want today’s students to be successful tomorrow. Not only is educational achievement important for the prospects of individual North Carolinians, it is important for the economy as a whole. Too often, North Carolina employers cannot find employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the available jobs. Challenges in finding a talented, prepared workforce make it harder for businesses to innovate, drive growth and introduce the best products and services to the marketplace. Ensuring more students graduate with the knowledge and skills for success in jobs and postsecondary education – will lead to a better future for North Carolina.

The Institute not only collaborates with its affiliate partner, the Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy, but with the North Carolina Community Colleges System, the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI), and numerous North Carolina business groups and advocacy organizations to facilitate positive change in our state. Over the years, The Institute has engaged in a variety of North Carolina activities:

  • Leadership Academies
  • Superintendent gatherings
  • Science Summit
  • The NC DPI Advisory Committee
  • The Governor’s Education Advisory Council
  • The Office of the Governor
  • NC Museum of Natural Resources
  • Publications to board members, superintendents, principals, and business leaders
  • The Holshouser Legislator Retreats
