On November 19-20, 2003, the James B. Hunt, Jr.Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy
convened the first annual North Carolina Legislators Retreat, in partnership with Senate President Pro Tempore, Marc Basnight; Republican Speaker of the House, Richard Morgan; and Democratic Speaker of the House, James Black. The 2003 Retreat presented a forum for legislative leaders to hear from nationally recognized experts and talk about educational equity, student assessment and demographics and other critical issues facing North Carolina’s public education system. The discussion encouraged legislators to re-examine goals for the state’s education system and explore new strategies to keep the state on the road to continuous school improvement.
