Did You Know?

Did You Know? is the North Carolina education policy fact sheet of the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy. Each issue provides legislators and other state policymakers with brief, jargon-free facts and figures about key education issues facing our state.

  • Issue 2: Only 34 percent of North Carolina residents 25 years and older have an associate’s degree or higher.
  • Issue 3: North Carolina high school students are taking and passing Advanced Placement exams at a greater rate, but disparities still exist for disadvantaged students.
  • Issue 4: Students who take postsecondary remedial or developmental courses are significantly less likely to complete their credential or degree.
  • Issue 5: Innovative efforts are underway in North Carolina to train and evaluate school leaders.
  • Issue 6: One-third of North Carolina students who took the ACT tested at the college-ready level in 2011.
  • Issue 7: Under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Weast, the Montgomery County Public Schools closed the fifth-grade achievement gap in reading by more than 25 percentage points.
