November 25, 2008
Enriqueta (Queta) Bond, Ph.D., former Burroughs Wellcome Fund president and executive officer for the Institute of Medicine, has been appointed to the James B. Hunt, Jr., Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy Foundation's Board of Directors.
Former Governor Jim Hunt, chairman of the Hunt Institute, said “Queta has a deep passion for education, and she understands that students need a world-class education to compete and thrive. She also brings an intense understanding of the sciences and scientific processes—both of which students must have a deeper knowledge in this global economy. I am delighted that she will be a part of the Foundation's board, and I look forward to working with her on critical education issues.”
Under Bond’s leadership, the BWF endowment increased from $400 million to more than $800 million and created the North Carolina Institute for Education Policymakers and the Health Research Alliance. Career development awards were also created for biomedical scientists, physician scientists, and physical scientists awarding more than $30 million each year. The North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center was also established during her tenure.
Bond is a former professor at Chatham College in Pittsburgh and at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine where she directed a regional genetics counseling program. Some of her service on organizational boards include: chair of the Academies Board on Capacity Development of African Academies of Science, National Institute for Statistical Sciences, New England Center of Excellence in Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the Research Triangle Park Foundation.
The Wellesley College graduate has a master’s from the University of Virginia, and a doctorate in molecular biology and biochemical genetics from Georgetown University.
