Former UNC Board of Governors Chair Appointed to Hunt Institute Board

Lexington native Jim Phillips, Jr., who served as chair of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors from 2006 – 2008, has been appointed to the James B. Hunt, Jr., Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy Foundation’s Board of Directors. He formerly served the Institute’s Board in an ex-officio capacity while chairing the Board of Governors.
Former Governor Jim Hunt, who serves as chair of the board said, “I have known Jim for a long time, and I trust him to support bold initiatives that will help the Hunt Institute improve education for all children across the nation. I am certain his tenacity will help drive our mission, and I am grateful that he is continuing his service to the Board.”
Phillips was named by Law & Politics magazine as one of the top lawyers in North Carolina in 2007. In addition to trial practice, he has represented clients before the North Carolina Utilities Commission, the North Carolina Property Tax Commission, the North Carolina Tax Review Board, the North Carolina Board of Elections, and in proceedings before the Office of Administrative Hearings.
A UNC and Wake Forest University graduate, Phillips’ experience representing businesses and business leaders has given him the ability to recognize strategies leading to favorable results for his clients. He has also litigated cases involving property and trade secrets, contracts, real property, employment and tax issues, defamation, construction, and business torts.
He is a member of the Triad Stage Board of Directors and serves on the Committee on Judicial Independence for the North Carolina Bar Association.
