The Intersection Webinar Recap: Data Quality Campaign
Our thanks to Taryn Hochleitner, Senior Associate of Policy & Advocacy at the Data Quality Campaign. Taryn talked with us to cover DQC’s recent report “Growth Data: It Matters, and It’s Complicated” which explores the different ways states have committed to measuring student growth and what that means for education stakeholders and their understanding of student success. Our conversation included insights and key findings found in the research.
All but two states incorporated individual student growth data as an accountability measure for elementary and middle school students into their ESSA plans, but how states define and measure growth differs across states.
It can be difficult for parents to fully understand reported growth data, especially if the data are reported without explanation on school report cards. States should consider providing explanations for and context to growth data to ensure that it is accessible to parents.
Looking ahead, states should be transparent about which growth measure they chose, why that specific measure was chosen, and what it’s helping tell about student success in their state.

We hope you’ll join us for our next webinar on Wednesday, February 27th at 1:00 PM EST for a conversation with Dr. Tiffany Jones, Director of Higher Education Policy at The Education Trust. Tiffany will discuss EdTrust’s recent report “Aiming for Equity: A Guide to Statewide Attainment Goals for Racial Equity Advocates” which includes a national analysis of statewide attainment goals which address racial equity, a list of models and resources for stakeholders and action steps for advocates based on their states’ progress on setting attainment goals. We hope you can join us, register here!
