The James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy was founded at the close of Governor James B. Hunt, Jr.'s historic fourth term as governor of North Carolina to carry on his legacy as an advocate for quality education for all children.

The Hunt Institute was launched with generous funding from The Atlantic Philanthropies, which has continued its support through two subsequent grants. Additional support for the Institute's work has also grown considerably. Among the sponsors of our efforts are the Wallace Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, State Farm Companies Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Broad Foundation, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, the Lumina Foundation for Education, the Pumpkin Foundation, the North Carolina Science, Mathematics and Technology Education Center and the North Carolina General Assembly.

The Hunt Institute's mission is to work with leaders to secure America's future through quality education. The Institute fulfills this mission by convening leaders in sessions led by experts in policy and practice. The result is the sharing and development of ideas and practices about educational leadership and the conversion of strategic ideas into action. The Institute also provides consultative services to its clients to assist them in focusing on specific policies that leaders either seek to propose or implement.

The Hunt Institute's primary constituency is governors. Recognizing, however, that governors alone can not effect change and progress, the Hunt Institute also works with lieutenant governors, legislators, mayors, business leaders, and PK-16 education leaders.

Since June 2002, the Hunt Institute has held three very successful Governors Education Symposia, a Lt. Governors Education Symposium and three North Carolina Legislators Retreats. We have also provided direct assistance to more than half of our nation's governors through state visits, education summits and consultations.

As we forge ahead, we will continue to focus on critical issues. Among them, math and science education, college access and success, out of school time efforts, educating for a global economy, creativity, and competitiveness. Knowing the importance of preparing our young people to succeed in the new economy, the Hunt Institute is also extensively looking into the issue of national standards.

The board of the James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy consists of elected officials, business leaders, and educational experts. Former Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. serves as chair of the board which meets twice a year to review Hunt Institute objectives and identify emerging issues in education.

"Education is the most important responsibility for any governor and must be a top priority. To get a newly elected governor started off on the right foot, the James B. Hunt Institute is a most valuable resource." "As a newly elected Governor in 1995, I wish I had had an opportunity to attend an education symposium such as the one hosted by the Hunt Institute at the University of North Carolina. Even after seven years as a sitting governor I found the symposium to be informative and of great value to me."
